Teacher Tommy says ...

"This page is very important"

Have a safe household

There are many substances that we live with and use in our everyday lives, but so many of these are harmful and sometimes fatal to our birds.

Here is a list of these items any birdy household should avoid. This list will be updated as and when new items come to light.

Alcohol. We don't mean you. There is nothing wrong with having a nice glass of wine of an evening but when it comes to birds alcohol is a definite no.

Scented candles or potpouri.

Teacher Tommy says.... "A wonderful alternative is to fill a pan with plenty of water, a slice of lemon and a cinamon stick and let it boil. The wonderul aroma will fill your home. One it has boiled for 10mins pour the liquid into small ceramic pots and place on your radiators to keep the scent circulating"

Carpet cleaners, household cleansers, detergents, soaps.

Teacher Tommy says... "Its much better to use bird safe disinfectant such as F10. Then you know it's safe for us. There is more information on F10 on the page after this one"

DDT -Felt tip markers Pens – pencils

Nail Polish - Nail Polish remover

Toilet bowl cleaners

Overheated non-stick cookware

Overheated cooking oil.

Air fresheners (especially plug-ins) - see "scented candles" part above for a safe alternative.

Aerosol sprays, many types can kill a parrot including hairspray, paint, shoe dyes, water repellents, household cleaners, insect sprays repellents, flea spray, fake snow etc

Cigarette smoke is  BAD!

Teacher Tommy says.... "Please don't make me breath in your smoke, Think of what it is doing to your lungs....it will be doing even more damage to mine".

Doors. Birds like to sit on the tops of open doors. They can be killed if someone closes the door.

Perfume and aftershave can be deadly as most are alcohol based and a lot use gases to make spraying easier.

Also think about your bird and guests to your home which may not know what is dangerous to a bird. They could think that playing with your birds or giving them silly things like a drink (alcohol) or even cigarette is funny. Never let anyone that is drinking handle your birds. A bite from a frightened bird could lead to the bird being thrown on the floor or against the wall.

Ok. I can hear you saying “Does he think we are idiots, we know all this " But if i didn't tell you then i wouldn't be doing my job properly. These simple measures can help to ensure that we stay as healthy as we can be!
